PhD in Machine Learning: Position in ML Optimization

The Institute for Quantum Control of the Peter Grünberg Institute at Forschungszentrum Jülich specializes in novel optimization strategies using Machine Learning for emerging quantum technologies inviting application for PhD. The institute has pioneered the application of quantum optimal control methods to quantum computation and to many-body quantum systems.

This includes the development of physical models and model reduction techniques as well as algorithmic advances of in-situ optimization and machine learning to tackle the complex processes inherent to scalable quantum devices.

PhD Position in Machine Learning

  • Designing novel quantum gates for the high-precision operation of solid-state platforms.
  • Developing analytical models to describe the energy structure and dynamical processes of the systems.
  • Researching algorithmic advances and new directions for our quantum optimization library, including advances in reinforcement learning, autonomous model learning, and randomized benchmarking.
  • Incorporating new physics ideas into the optimizations to account for more complex tasks as devices scale-up, including for light-matter interaction and dissipation engineering.
  • Regularly interacting with experimentalist partners so as to retain a high fidelity with respect to real devices and providing access to our cloud-based optimization software suite.

Qualification

  • Master degree in physics.
  • A background and a strong interest in developing analytical models and numerical optimization methods, and interest in working closely with experiments.
  • Programming experience in e.g. python.
  • Fluent command of written and spoken English.
  • Most importantly: enthusiasm to explore uncharted territory, develop and follow your own ideas.
  • Ability to work autonomously in close interaction within a team.

The Peter Grünberg Institute at Forschungszentrum Jülich

  •  A highly motivated working group as part of an international and interdisciplinary working environment at one of Europe’s largest research Establishments.
  • Outstanding computing facilities and a world leader in quantum optimization research.
  • Continuous scientific mentoring by your scientific advisor as well as feedback and expertise in the multiple facets of optimization technologies and solid-state physics.
  • The opportunity of participating in (international) conferences and project meetings.
  • Participation in overarching seminars including certificate.
  • The skills that you will acquire during your PhD are in high demand both in academia and in high-tech companies: at present, there is significant investment from private and governmental funding agencies in the field of quantum technologies.
  • Pay in line with 75 % of pay group 13 of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund).
