ICMR Call for Research Proposal 2024 – Overview and Purpose

The ICMR Extramural Research Programme provides financial assistance for research projects that address priority health problems in India. The focus is on investigator-initiated Intermediate Grant projects, which should build on well-documented proof of concept studies and be designed to achieve substantial impact.

Types of Research Proposals:

  1. Discovery Research:
    • Aimed at finding novel interventions through basic research.
    • Examples include biomarker commercialization studies and research on diagnostics, devices, therapeutics, vaccines, phytopharmaceuticals, and traditional medicines.
  2. Development Research:
    • Focuses on developing interventions for screening, diagnosis, prevention, or treatment.
    • Examples include Point-of-care tests, molecular diagnostic tests, medical devices, and AI/ML predictive tools.
  3. Delivery Research:
    • Targets overcoming barriers in delivering effective interventions.
    • Examples include health system-based interventions, implementing national health programs, and improving healthcare quality.
  4. Descriptive Research:
    • It aims to understand diseases, their burden, risk factors, and determinants.
    • Examples include studying the relationship between pollution exposure and pregnancy outcomes or the impact of vaccinations.

Priority Diseases and Conditions:

Projects addressing diseases such as cancer, tuberculosis, diabetes, antimicrobial resistance, and reproductive health will receive preference.

Duration and Funding:

Project budgets must range from INR 2 crores to less than 8 crores, with a maximum duration of three years. An additional 6-month period for preparatory activities can be included.

How to Apply:

Interested researchers can submit proposals online. The Principal Investigator should represent a team with credentials for relevant skills and experience. The applicant should not have more than five ongoing ICMR-funded projects, with ongoing grants of less than INR 25 crores.

Submission of proposal: From 01-Jan-2024 (Monday) 10:00hrs To 29-Feb-2024 (Thursday) 17:00hrs
Review and selection: 21-May-2024(Tuesday)
Proposal improvement & final submission of documents:
20-June-2024(Thursday)
Approval and release of funds: 30-September-2024 (Monday)
