A few years back (2018) the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced that PhD degree is mandatory requirement for the appointment of Assistant Professor in departments of the universities from 2021. Now, the date has been extended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
PhD Not Mandatory for Appointment of Assistant Professor – UGC
To maintain the quality and standards of teaching in the Universities and colleges, UGC regulations 2018 stipulated that Ph.D. degree shall be the mandatory qualification for direct recruitment to the post of assistant professors in universities from 01.07.2021. The UGC, in view of COVID-19 pandemic, has decided to extend the date of applicability of Ph.D. has mandatory qualification for direct recruitment to the post of assistant professors in universities from 01.07.2021 to 01.07.2023. Accordingly, Amendment to the aforesaid regulations has been notified in the Gazette on 11.10.2021.

This notification would give huge relief to the current Ph.D. scholars (Part-Time/Full Time) who are in the process of heading to finish the degree. Also, it would reduce the fear of losing teaching jobs in the Univeristies.
