At the Institute of Membrane Research around 50 scientists research on membranes for diverse applications. With its interdisciplinary materials and engineering research the institute covers the entire spectrum from basic research to industrial application.
The Institute of Membrane Research develops materials and processes for novel polymer membranes for gas and liquid phase separation. In our research, IMR combine experiments with digital models with the goal of accelerating membrane design and process improvement. IMR invite applications for a PhD positions, as soon as possible, in the field of development of membranes for salinity gradient power generation. The position is limited to 3 years.
Equality of opportunity is an important part of our personnel policy. IMR would therefore strongly encourage qualified women to apply for the position.
Your tasks
The task of the PhD student will be to synthesize polymers via controlled radical polymerization techniques and fabricate membranes using the synthesized polymers for salinity gradient power generation. The principal aim is to investigate the structure property relationship in order to control selective ion transport through the prepared membranes. Permselectivity, area resistance, water uptake, charge density and morphology of the prepared membranes have to be investigated thoroughly. The obtained data has to be analysed by ANOVA (analysis of variance) and multiple regreassion analysis to establish empirical model i.e. quantitative structure property relationship.
Your profile
#Master degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Membrane Engineering or relevant disciplines.
#good knowledge of organic chemistry, especially polymer synthesis
#good knowledge of electrochemistry
#knowledge of statistical data analysis
#capacity for teamwork in an interdisciplinary environment
#fluency in English is mandatory (spoken and written)
#German language skills are desirable
#experience of controlled radical polymerization and membrane fabrication will be an advantage (not mandatory)
